Oman is a monarchy where the Sultan the ultimate say. Sharia law has shaped and formed the legal structure of Oman, as Oman is an Islamic country. Respect the local laws and traditions with humility and reverence. This is particularly relevant during the holy month of Ramadan and during religious events.

Narcotics

There is absolutely no tolerance for narcotics in Oman. There are serious sentences, such as the death penalty, for consumption or selling. Even possessing a small sum for personal use will result in incarceration for a year at least.

Photographs

Do not take photos of government and military buildings or even the airports. Before you photograph locals, ask their permission.

Drone regulations in Oman

It is illegal in Oman to fly recreational drones. This has a minimum sentence of 3 years in prison. Many accidents are involved in recreational drones too close to airport facilities and flight routes. As a result, Omani authorities had to enforce this rule.

It is an offence to disrespect the royal family, the local government or its officials. Do not make any insulting remarks about them.

In Oman, the legal drinking age is set at 21, and it is a crime for someone to be openly drunk or publicly consuming alcohol.

In Oman, single partners sharing a room goes against the cultural values. For the Omani officials, it is often an offence to inquire about one's marital status. Therefore, you should alright.

The political situation in Oman

Due to the Middle East's political climate, there are political tensions encountered in Oman too, albeit quite rarely. Saudi Arabia and Yemen are two bordering countries to Oman. Due to continued violence in these countries, the Omani border with Yemen have restrictions to travel to that country. Until you are formally allowed to do so, the Omani officials will not let you head to Yemen. When large-scale protests and movements are occurring, be mindful of the atmosphere and try to completely avoid them. Most demonstrations are peaceful. Because of Oman's non-interventionist approach to foreign policies, they have only played a diplomatic role in the turmoil that surrounds Yemen. Therefore, it is completely safe for you to go. Just make sure you are not planning to head to Yemen from here on. That will not come to fruition as there are strict policies in place.
